Piriformis syndrome

Deep buttock pain radiating into the leg? In piriformis syndrome, a gluteal muscle irritates the sciatic nerve – highly treatable.

Overview

What is piriformis syndrome?

In piriformis syndrome, the piriformis muscle in the buttock irritates the sciatic nerve running beneath it. The symptoms resemble sciatica, but originate from the muscle. A thorough assessment distinguishes piriformis syndrome from irritation coming from the spine.

Typical symptoms

A deep pain in the buttock that can radiate into the leg. It typically worsens with prolonged sitting, when standing up, and with certain hip rotation movements.

Possible causes

Overuse or tightness of the piriformis muscle, muscular imbalances, prolonged sitting, and one-sided loading. Weak pelvic stability also plays a role.

Our solution

How ToonyTherapy helps you

We release the muscle tightness with manual therapy and improve nerve gliding through neurodynamics. Targeted evidence-based training stabilises the pelvis and hip so the muscle is not overloaded again.

Frequently asked questions

The symptoms are similar, but in piriformis syndrome the nerve irritation comes from the gluteal muscle, not the spine. This distinction is important for treatment.
