Overview
What are Meniscus Problems?
The meniscus acts as a shock absorber in the knee. Problems arise from acute injuries (e.g., twisting) or – more commonly – from age-related changes. Important: Many meniscus changes seen on MRI do not cause symptoms, and degenerative tears are now mostly treated conservatively.
Typical Symptoms
Pain in the inner or outer knee joint line, often during rotational movements, squatting, or climbing stairs. Sometimes swelling or a feeling of catching.
Possible Causes
Acute: Twisting and rotational fall movements, often during sports. Degenerative: age-related wear and tear of meniscus tissue, often without a specific event.
