Runner’s Knee (Iliotibial Band Syndrome)

Stabbing pain on the outside of your knee when running? Runner’s knee is typical for runners – and can be effectively managed with targeted training.

Overview

What is Runner’s Knee (Iliotibial Band Syndrome)?

Runner’s Knee (ITBS) results from irritation on the outer knee, where the iliotibial band – a tough band of connective tissue on the outside of the thigh – glides over the bone. With repetitive strain, especially during running, the tissue becomes irritated.

Typical Symptoms

A sharp or burning pain on the outside of the knee, typically appearing after a certain duration of running and increasing with downhill running. There is usually no pain at rest.

Possible Causes

Training errors (too rapid progression), muscular imbalances, weak hip stability, and unfavorable running technique. A single cause is rarely responsible.

Our Solution

How ToonyTherapy Helps You

A movement analysis – particularly a running analysis – uncovers the actual cause, often weak hip stability. We alleviate the irritation with manual therapy and build hip and leg stability with targeted evidence-based training so that runner’s knee does not return.
