Overview
What is a Herniated Disc (Lower Back)?
With a herniated disc, disc tissue protrudes and can press on a nerve root. Important to know: Many people have herniated discs without any symptoms. Whether and how much it hurts depends less on the imaging and more on nerve irritation and the overall situation. The good news: Herniated discs often resolve on their own.
Typical Symptoms
Back pain, often radiating into the leg, accompanied by tingling, numbness, or weakness. Symptoms can worsen when sitting, bending, or straining.
Possible Causes
Intervertebral discs change naturally throughout life. A herniation usually arises from a combination of stress and predisposition, often without a single triggering event. Weak core muscles and lack of movement increase the risk of symptoms.
