Overview
What is non-specific low back pain?
Non-specific low back pain refers to pain in the lower back without a clearly identifiable structural cause. That may sound worrying, but it is good news: In over 80% of cases, there is no dangerous underlying cause. The pain usually results from the interaction of poor loading patterns, muscular weakness, lack of movement, and how the nervous system processes stress.
Typical symptoms
Typical symptoms are dull, pulling, or tight pain in the lower back, often dependent on load or posture. It may radiate into the buttocks, but usually remains limited to the back. Morning stiffness and symptoms after prolonged sitting are common.
Possible causes
Common triggers include long periods of sitting, one-sided strain, too little movement, weak core muscles, and stress. Often, several factors come together. Important: This kind of pain does not mean your back is “broken”—the structures are usually healthy, but overloaded or undertrained.
