Neck and arm pain (cervicobrachialgia)

When neck pain radiates into the shoulder and arm, a nerve root is often irritated—when treated in a targeted way, this usually improves significantly.

Overview

What is neck and arm pain (cervicobrachialgia)?

In cervicobrachialgia, pain radiates from the cervical spine via the shoulder into the arm. The cause is usually irritation of a nerve root in the cervical spine region. The pain is unpleasant, but in most cases it can be treated well without surgery.

Typical symptoms

Pain pulling from the neck into the shoulder and arm, sometimes down into the hand. This may be accompanied by tingling, numbness, or a feeling of weakness. Certain head positions make the symptoms worse.

Possible causes

A disc change or narrowing at the nerve exit point often irritates the nerve root. Tight muscles and reduced nerve gliding can also play a role.
