Neck pain (cervical spine syndrome)

A tight, stiff neck? Neck pain is one of the most common complaints—and can usually be treated effectively.

Overview

What is neck pain (cervical spine syndrome)?

The term cervical spine syndrome summarises complaints in the cervical spine area: pain, muscle tension and restricted mobility in the neck. In most cases, there is no serious cause behind it, but rather an interplay of posture, overuse, stress and muscular weakness.

Typical symptoms

Pulling or tense pain in the neck, often extending into the back of the head or shoulders. Mobility is restricted, and turning the head is difficult. The symptoms often worsen after long periods of sitting at a screen.

Possible causes

Prolonged sitting, screen work, poor posture, stress, and weak neck and core muscles. Draughts and sleeping position can also play a role.
