Calcific tendinopathy (Tendinosis calcarea)

Sudden, sometimes severe shoulder pain? Calcific tendinopathy is unpleasant, but highly treatable – and the calcium often disappears on its own.

Overview

What is calcific tendinopathy (Tendinosis calcarea)?

In calcific tendinopathy, calcium deposits build up in a tendon of the rotator cuff. This can go unnoticed for a long time or – especially during the resorption phase – cause severe pain. The good news: In many cases, the body breaks down the calcium on its own.

Typical symptoms

Pain with load and movement, often when lifting the arm, and frequently night pain. In acute phases, the pain can be very intense and make the shoulder almost immobile.

Possible causes

The exact cause is not fully understood; blood-flow and load-related factors play a role. Calcific tendinopathy typically goes through several phases until it resolves spontaneously.
