Intercostal neuralgia involves the irritation of a nerve that runs between two ribs. The pain typically radiates in a belt-like pattern along the rib. Causes often lie in the thoracic spine, muscular tension, or restricted mobility of the rib cage. New nerve pain in the chest area should be medically evaluated.

A burning, stabbing, or belt-like pulling pain along a rib, often intensified by breathing, coughing, or certain movements. Sometimes accompanied by abnormal sensations along the rib.
